Health Protection Strategy – Review of the South Australian Arbovirus Management Strategy

The South Australian Arbovirus Management Strategy highlights emerging issues and identifies opportunities to protect South Australian residents and visitors against serious diseases caused by blood-feeding arthropods.

Mosquitoes are vectors of several arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) affecting humans and are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world. In South Australia, endemic flaviviruses, including Murray Valley encephalitis virus, West Nile virus Kunjin strain, and Japanese encephalitis virus, are of particular concern due to their potential to cause permanent neurological damage or death in humans. Alphaviruses, including the Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus, are also a cause for concern in South Australia as they can cause chronic illness.

Healthy Environs was engaged to work with SA Health’s Health Protection Services Team to review the Strategy and accompanying Plan which provides a risk-based approach to determine required mosquito surveillance and control activities. Our team led consultation on the draft Plan with local and state government stakeholders to foster a partnership approach to South Australia’s Arbovirus management.

We look forward to the Strategy and Plan being rolled out.

Aged Care – Support Development and Assistance Panel

People in rural and remote communities across Australia face particular challenges in aged care and health services. The Commonwealth Remote and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aged Care Service Development Assistance Panel provides professional support to aged care providers in remote areas, and those providing care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As a panel provider, Healthy Environs leads strategic and operational planning, workforce training, service redesign and change management for services for aged care facilities in rural and remote locations.

Our team is experienced in working collaboratively with staff, management and Board members to address regulatory requirements, the Aged Care Quality Standards and funded aged care programs. Our approach is one of respecting and building the capacity of the organisations we work with, to drive sustainable change.

Capacity Building Resources for Local Government

Preventive Health SA works in partnership with the Local Government Association of South Australia (LGA SA) to support and build the capacity of South Australian councils to strengthen community wellbeing. Preventative SA wanted to develop a capacity-building resource local government professionals could use to help them plan and evaluate community wellbeing initiatives.

Healthy Environs was engaged to provide an experienced public health and social policy team to develop this learning resource for Preventive Health SA. Our team carefully considered the diversity of councils in size and remoteness and worked collectively with Preventive Health SA and LGA SA to research and gather evidence to develop the learning materials. The materials covered preventive health and community wellbeing, the determinants of health, supporting physically active communities, inclusive and connected communities and planning and evaluating community wellbeing initiatives.

We look forward to this resource being rolled out to SA councils.
